Technical notes
The component is self-contained: one file, no dependencies, palette in the local --vibeui-nativeselect-003-* variables. Server component: the only hook is useId. A select has no placeholder attribute, so the first option always looks selected — here the stand-in role is played by <option value="" disabled hidden>: it shows in the collapsed field but is unavailable in the open list. The choice is set through defaultValue="" on the select itself rather than a selected attribute on the option: React warns otherwise. While the stand-in is selected the field does not pass required, and the select:required:invalid rule paints the text muted — the "nothing chosen" state is visible without a script. The asterisk is marked aria-hidden, its meaning is carried by visually hidden text.
