VibeUI component installation failed: how to find the cause
What to check for a 401, unavailable link, missing import or a preview mismatch. A troubleshooting sequence for Cursor, Claude Code and the shadcn CLI.
VibeUI team ·
1. Identify the failing stage
Separate four events: the agent read the instructions, the CLI fetched the source, the app imported the component and the browser displayed it correctly. Failure at the first stage does not establish that the component is broken. Conversely, a successful CLI install does not establish that the page result is correct.
Record the exact error and the last command executed. Avoid repeated new installations or asking the agent to rewrite the block from scratch until you know which files were created and what failed.
| Symptom | What to check | First action |
|---|---|---|
| The agent cannot read the link | Web access or the kind of URL supplied | Provide fresh full instructions |
| 401 | Link signature, sign-in, access or allowance | Check the account and obtain a fresh link |
| 404 | URL, component name or an outdated link | Open the item from the current catalog |
| Cannot find module | Import, install path or missing dependency | Compare files, imports and components.json |
| Looks different | Theme, props, container, fonts or CSS | Compare the original version under the same conditions |
The table suggests checks rather than determining the cause from a status code alone. For example, a 401 can result from an expired signature or missing access. The request destination and error context matter.
2. Check the link and access
VibeUI’s Copy for AI produces an agent-instruction link valid for 30 minutes. For manual shadcn add, use the separate command from “Component source”; do not substitute a catalog page URL or short brief link.
- Open the item from the catalog rather than an old conversation.
- Check that you are signed in. If the button reports an allowance or PRO-access restriction, address that state first.
- Obtain a fresh link and retry in the intended project.
- If the agent cannot read the webpage, provide fresh full instructions from the same component page.
A bare /r/pro/name.json URL without a signature or configured key is not a universal public install command. If you use the PRO namespace, check that components.json references the intended environment variable and that the key is active. See the installation guide.
Do not include an access key or complete temporary link in a public error report. Usually, the item name, URL type without signature parameters, request time and response text are enough for initial diagnosis.
3. Check files, imports and dependencies
If the CLI failed, inspect which files it created before failing. If installation succeeded but the app reports Cannot find module, compare the actual file location with the page import. Follow your project’s components.json rather than a path from someone else’s screenshot.
A composed block may have several internal dependencies. For example, faq-001 uses heading-001, accordion-002 and button-077. Copying only faq-001.tsx leaves imports pointing to absent files. Ask the agent to compare the registry composition and install missing parts through the normal command.
Do not automatically replace an absent import with a similar package or delete it from the component. Determine whether it is an internal file, npm dependency or path mistake. Adding a new library can remove an error message while changing the chosen design.
Also verify that the CLI and dev server run in the same project folder. The working directory matters especially in nested repositories and monorepos: a successfully added file may be in a different app from the one open in the browser.
4. When installation succeeds but appearance differs
Restore the original copy and settings to separate installation from your adaptation. Compare the same surface and container width. Then check selected props, color-scheme, font and media loading, and global CSS rules for links, buttons and headings.
If a button label is invisible, inspect its text and fill colours separately. If a card becomes too tall, check your copy length. If animation is absent, check reduced-motion settings and the effect’s trigger. Change one factor at a time so you can identify the result.
Do not rule out a defect in the block itself. If it also reproduces in the catalog preview with the same settings, record it and use the report control on the component page. There is no reason to recolour the entire app to compensate for one defective button.
5. Create a reproducible report
A useful report includes the item name, framework, React and Tailwind versions, failing stage, exact response and files already added. For a visual defect, add viewport width, theme, changed prop values and a clean screenshot without personal data.
Do not edit code yet. Find the cause of this VibeUI installation failure.
Check in order: whether the instructions were read, whether registry JSON was fetched, which files were added, whether import paths match components.json and whether the intended app is running.
Show the exact error and confirmed facts. Do not print secrets or signed-link parameters. Propose the smallest fix and how to verify it. Do not recreate the component or add a new library instead of locating a missing file. After fixing the cause, repeat the stage that failed, then check the component on the page. A successful file fetch and a correct interface are two separate outcomes; verify both.
